Engelenschanze, Munster
The Engelenschanze, nestled in the southwestern corner of the historic Promenade ring, is a lesser-known gem blending centuries of city history with tranquil urban green space. What you see today is a transformed bastion-once known as Johannisschanze, constructed around 1622 and encircled by water-later renamed after Johann Joseph Engelen, whose 18th‑century estate gave rise to the modern name.
By the mid‑18th century, Munster began dismantling its ramparts. Around 1764, this bastion was repurposed into part of the scenic Promenade, a broad, tree‑lined walkway encircling the Altstadt. In the 1960s, the surviving section of the former fortification was reshaped into a public park, with a water trench remnant and a majestic copper beech marking the historic layout.
Since 1975, Engelenschanze has featured “Three Rotating Squares”, a kinetic sculpture by American artist George Rickey. When first installed, it provoked lively debate among locals, making it Munster’s first significant public modern art piece. Today, the gently moving metal sculpture delights visitors amid peaceful lawns and manicured paths.
Today, Engelenschanze offers a serene pause in a bustling cityscape. Ideal for a leisurely walk, lunchtime break, or quiet reflection, it’s both a historical vantage point and a local urban oasis. Located near major transport arteries and only a short distance from Munster’s main station, it bridges vibrant city life and a tranquil environment seamlessly.
