Heeremanschen Hof, Munster

Heeremanschen Hof, Munster

The Heereman’scher Hof is an example of Renaissance civic architecture and one of the city's most significant landmarks. Constructed between 1549 and 1564 for citizen Hermann Kock-possibly incorporating parts of an older medieval stone structure-the building features a richly ornamented façade in Baumberger sandstone with six window axes, coupled ground-floor windows, high pilasters, and a central oriel adorned with a carved motto above. A balustrade crowns the frontage, and a decorative half‑rosette with the date “1564” graces the intricate gable design.

Over the centuries, the building passed into the hands of various noble families, including the Freiherren von Schorlemer and Heereman von Zuydtwyk, serving as a city palace and even housing a “club for aristocratic ladies” during the 19th century. Largely destroyed during World War II along with much of Munster's historic centre, the Hof was meticulously rebuilt between 1947 and 1951 under architect Heinrich Bartmann. The restoration aimed to preserve as much of the surviving street façade and cellar as possible, while the interior was modernized to accommodate judicial use.

Today, the restored Heereman’scher Hof is home to the University of Munster’s Professional School gGmbH, which since 2011 has operated seven modern seminar and conference rooms within its roughly 1,600 square meters interior. These spaces-capable of hosting between 10 and 70 participants-feature modern presentation technology, Wi‑Fi, and smart catering options drawing on regional suppliers. Noteworthy is the preservation of historical elements like the elegantly curved main staircase and select mid‑20th‑century furnishings, all in dialogue with the building’s Renaissance character.
