Ewha Womans University, Seoul
Ewha Womans University is a historic institution in the city, founded in 1886 by American missionary Mary F. Scranton as the first modern educational institute exclusively for women in Korea. Named “Ewha” by Emperor Gojong, which means “Pear Blossom”, the university has grown into one of the world’s largest women’s educational institutions and a pillar of female empowerment and academic excellence in South Korea.
The campus offers a seamless blend of lush green spaces, grand stone architecture, and modern design. The award-winning Ewha Campus Complex, carved partly underground and unveiled in 2008, now anchors the university with classrooms, cafés, shops, and communal areas that descend into a valley-like amphitheater-a favorite photo spot for visitors.
For tourists, the Ewha Welcome Center, opened in 2013, is a convenient starting point. It offers visitor-friendly features like an information desk, exhibition lounge detailing the university’s 130+ year history, and a gift shop selling university-themed souvenirs. Guided student-led campus tours are also available.
Art and culture enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the university museum, originally established in 1935 during the colonial era to preserve Korean folk crafts, pottery, and national treasures. Today, the university's exhibitions span a broad spectrum of traditional and contemporary Korean art, housed in both the original museum and its modern centennial facility.
