Ferreira de Castro Museum, Sintra
The Ferreira de Castro Museum in Sintra celebrates the life and legacy of José Maria Ferreira de Castro, one of the most prominent Portuguese writers and journalists of the 20th century. Located just west of Sintra’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the museum stands next to Lawrence's Hotel, the oldest operating hotel in Iberia.
The museum, which opened on 6 June 1982 and remodeled by 22 July 1992, chronicles Ferreira de Castro’s life, from his Portuguese roots and emigration to Brazil to his return as a journalist and novelist. It features rare editions, manuscripts, personal items, and portraits by Eduardo Malta, Roberto Nobre, and Stuart Carvalhais, plus sculptures by Anjos Teixeira and Júlio de Sousa.
Ferreira de Castro's works, including A Selva, Emigrantes, Eternidade, and Terra Fria, brought him acclaim and made him the most translated Portuguese writer of his time. The museum's final room highlights his global reach and his bold criticism of the Estado Novo dictatorship.
The museum’s collection includes over 20,000 documents, encompassing letters, periodicals, manuscripts, and photographs, accessible for research purposes. It also displays original artworks by noted creators like Arlindo Vicente, Bernardo Marques, and Candido Portinari, enhancing the cultural value of the space.
The story of the museum itself is deeply tied to Ferreira de Castro’s bond with Sintra. In 1973, he donated a significant portion of his intellectual estate to the city, inspired by the encouragement of prominent writers and city officials. True to his wishes, his remains were laid to rest in the Sintra Mountains following his death in 1974, shortly after the Carnation Revolution.
The Ferreira de Castro Museum invites visitors to engage with the life of a literary giant while immersing themselves in the artistic and historical richness of Sintra.

Sintra Introduction Walking Tour
Traces of humanity in Sintra date back to Paleolithic times. At an open air site near the church of Sao Pedro de Canaferrim and the Moorish Castle there were found ceramics from 5,000 BC. The name Sintra is indo-European. It means "bright star" or "sun." Romans called the place "sacred mountain." Ptolemy called it "mountains of the moon."
