First Congregational Church of Detroit, Detroit

First Congregational Church of Detroit, Detroit

The First Congregational Church of Detroit, located on East Forest Avenue on the corner of Forest and Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit, is a remarkable historic landmark. Designated as a Michigan State Historic Site in 1974 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the church carries deep historical, architectural, and cultural significance.

Established on December 25, 1844, the church initially built two structures near the Detroit River before moving to its current site in 1891. The third and present building was designed by architect John Lyman Faxon, with a later addition, the Angel's Wing, constructed in 1921 by renowned architect Albert Kahn. The church also holds historical significance due to its connection to Gaius Glenn Atkins, who served as minister twice during the early 20th century.

The church’s architecture is a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Byzantine styles, featuring warm red limestone and intricate design elements. The Woodward Avenue facade showcases a five-bay loggia with a parapeted front gable, rounded windows with tracery, and a rounded arch. A 120-foot campanile adorned with narrow arcades and topped by an 8-foot copper figure of the Archangel Uriel adds to its grandeur. The building draws inspiration from Venetian and Ravennate churches, embodying a striking European aesthetic.

Inside, the sanctuary, influenced by the lower church of Saint Francis of Assisi, boasts intricately carved wood, ceiling portraits, and rose windows in vibrant colors. Murals by Lyle Durgin, completed in December 1891, enrich the space with artistic depth.

The church offers exhibits detailing its historical and architectural significance, with self-guided tours available to explore its storied facilities. One of its most unique features is the Underground Railroad Living Museum, a storytelling simulation that provides an immersive look into the journey of freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad.

The First Congregational Church of Detroit stands as a testament to historical resilience, architectural beauty, and the enduring legacy of social justice.
