First Covenant Church, Minneapolis
First Covenant Church (FCC) was once the heartbeat of Swedish immigrant life in Minneapolis, serving as a beacon for newcomers and old-timers alike. Established in 1874, the congregation made a bold move in 1887, setting sail for a Romanesque Revival structure designed by Warren Howard Hayes-like a grand wooden ship reimagined as a church.
Under the guidance of Pastor E.A. Skogsbergh, the FCC became a place where immigrants from all backgrounds felt at home, no matter their previous affiliations. With the city’s largest auditorium at the time, it played a key role in Minneapolis’ cultural life, hosting the fledgling Minneapolis Symphony (now the Minnesota Orchestra) starting in 1903. A separate education building arrived in 1937, and by 1967 it was seamlessly linked to the original church via a new connecting structure.
Today, the church has ceased operations, but the building remains a historical landmark in the city, standing as a testament to the resilience of its community and a reminder of the rich cultural legacy that shaped Minneapolis.
