The Armory, Minneapolis
The Twin Cities’ freshest concert spot (circa 2017) is a refurbished Works Progress Administration-era treasure: the National Guard Armory, rocking its original Art Deco charm. It’s had a few past lives-a sports arena, and even (gasp) a parking garage-but now it welcomes up to 8,400 music lovers with a big general admission floor and two tiers of balconies. The venue hits that sweet spot, attracting acts that are a bit too large (or too lively) for a sit-down theater. Keep an eye out for boxing matches and other athletic spectacles, too.
Bonus trivia: The Armory has a bit of pop culture cred-Prince filmed the “1999” music video here in 1982, and Aerosmith chose it as the backdrop for “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” in 1998.
Pro tip: give yourself some extra time to navigate 21st-century security in this 1930s building.
