Flame of Peace, Hiroshima
The Flame of Peace in Hiroshima is a powerful symbol of hope, remembrance, and the desire for a world free from nuclear weapons. Located at the center of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, it occupies a prominent position on the park's central axis, perfectly aligned with the Memorial Cenotaph and the Atomic Bomb Dome. This deliberate arrangement creates one of the park's most iconic views, linking the memory of the victims with a vision of peace for the future.
The flame burns above a stone pedestal shaped like two open hands, symbolizing both an appeal for peace and the determination of atomic bomb survivors to overcome suffering. Designed by architect Kenzo Tange and first lit on August 1, 1964, it is intended to remain burning until the last nuclear weapon has been eliminated from the world.
During major commemorative ceremonies, including the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6, the eternal flame forms the visual focal point of the event, reinforcing Hiroshima's message of reconciliation and nuclear disarmament.
