Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall, Hiroshima

Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall, Hiroshima

The Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, opened in 2002, is a solemn memorial dedicated to preserving the memory of those who suffered and died as a result of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during the Second World War.

One of the hall’s principal aims is to preserve the memories and personal stories of atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha. Testimonies describing their experiences before, during, and after the bombing are collected and archived so that their voices can be passed on to future generations.

The hall also gathers the names and photographs of atomic bomb victims, honoring them as individuals rather than presenting the tragedy solely through statistics. Through initiatives involving the reading and preservation of atomic bomb testimonies, the hall presents survivors’ accounts, photographs, written records, and other historical materials.

The building itself encourages quiet contemplation. Its subdued underground spaces and memorial displays create a solemn atmosphere in which visitors can reflect on the lives lost and consider the importance of peace.
