Fort East Martello Museum & Gardens, Key West

Fort East Martello Museum & Gardens, Key West

The Fort East Martello Museum & Gardens, found on South Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West, is a notable historic landmark. Built in 1862 during the Civil War, this brick-built stronghold now functions as a prominent historical museum (the inaugural one in the Florida Keys) and an art exhibit space. Its arched brick ceilings and curved walls add to the allure of a diverse collection, shedding light on Key West's eerie history. It was recognized as a part of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 19, 1972.

Located on Key West's southern shoreline, the Fort East Martello Museum & Gardens stands as the most well-preserved instance of Martello-style military design in the United States. It showcases displays focusing on local history and art. The museum, set within an ancient fort, includes a lookout tower. Exhibits feature maritime artifacts, military collectibles, a garden housing a vintage playhouse that's over 80 years old, and Robert the Doll (a haunted doll once owned by artist Robert Eugene Otto). It also boasts art galleries hosting the state's most extensive collections. The museum exhibits creations by folk artist Mario Sanchez and art made from discarded materials by Stanley Papio. Additionally, there's a citadel constructed of granite dating back to the Civil War era.

Why You Should Visit:
For a small museum, they sure do have a lot to see! The original fort is interesting on its own and you can take the circular iron staircase up a few floors to look out on the ocean-scape and the airport (which is immediately behind this structure).

Tip:
It doesn't take very long to go through the exhibits, so take the time to at least read about each item.
