Fort Nisqually, Tacoma

Fort Nisqually, Tacoma (must see)

Fort Nisqually is a reconstructed 19th-century fur-trading post that gives visitors a direct look at life around Puget Sound before Washington became a state. The original fort was established in 1833 by the Hudson’s Bay Company as the first European trading post on the sound. It later became part of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company, supplying wool, grain, livestock, and other goods to regional and international markets.

Although the fort once stood near the shoreline of present-day DuPont, several of its original buildings were moved and preserved here in the 1930s. Two surviving structures, the Factor’s House and the Granary, are among the oldest European-American buildings in the state. Their heavy timber construction, simple interiors, and practical design help show how the site functioned as both a business centre and a working settlement.

The surrounding reconstructed palisade, workshops, kitchen garden, trade store, and living quarters create a clear sense of daily activity at the fort. Visitors can see how goods were stored, meals were prepared, tools were used, and trade relationships shaped the region. Costumed interpreters often demonstrate blacksmithing, cooking, sewing, farming tasks, and other skills connected to the 1850s.

The site also reflects a more complex history than its wooden walls first suggest. Fort Nisqually operated in a landscape already home to Indigenous communities, especially the Nisqually and other Coast Salish peoples, whose knowledge, labour, and trade connections were central to the fort’s survival. For tourists, it offers a layered experience: part open-air museum, part working historic village, and part reminder of how commerce, colonization, and local cultures met in the Pacific Northwest.
