Owen Beach, Tacoma

Owen Beach, Tacoma

Owen Beach is one of the main waterfront areas within Point Defiance Park, established in 1888 and known for its forest, shoreline, gardens, and recreation spaces. Formerly called “Picnic Beach” or the “new beach,” it was renamed in 1959 for Floyd E. Owen, a long-serving park superintendent. The surrounding point is also part of the traditional homelands of the Puyallup Tribe, adding cultural depth to the shoreline’s recreational role.

Owen Beach remains an important landing place for the Tribal Canoe Journey, an Indigenous cultural event centred on canoe travel, protocol, and community. During the recent $6.3 million renovation, designers worked with Puyallup elders to add accessible ramps for hauling cedar canoes ashore. The project also prepared the beach for rising sea levels by moving the promenade, picnic lawn, and parking area farther inland and uphill.

The beach offers broad Puget Sound views, with driftwood, pebbled shoreline, tidal water, and forested slopes shaping the scene. A climbable orca sculpture in the play area nods to nearby marine life, including harbour seals, gray whales, and orcas. North along the shoreline, steep bluffs expose glacial layers of silt, sand, and gravel, with occasional fossilized wood fragments from ancient lakebeds.
