Fredenskirken (Peace Church), Aarhus

Peace Church (Fredenskirken) is a significant ecclesiastical structure located in the district of Viby, 3 kilometers south of the Aarhus city center in Denmark. Serving as a parish church within the Church of Denmark, it supports a community of approximately 7,145 parishioners, as recorded in 2015.

The church was constructed between 1958 and 1960 following the designs of architects F. Niclasen and Aksel Skov. Its establishment was part of the creation of Fredens Parish, which was formed by segregating the northern areas from Viby Parish in 1960. The name "Freden church" symbolizes hope for peace post-World War II and reflects its location in the Fredensvang neighborhood.

Architecturally, Peace Church exhibits a modern design with its structure primarily composed of red brick. The original architectural plan included a large main church room, a smaller perpendicular wing designated for storage and offices, and a distinct free-standing simple church tower. Significant renovations and additions have been made over the years, including the transformation of the adjoining wing's flat roof into a saddle roof with trussed rafters in 1986, a complete re-facade with red brick, and the addition of a copper roof to the tower in 1990, and the integration of a new wing enclosing the church tower within a courtyard in 1997. These changes have expanded the church’s facilities, which now include a church room, a chapel, community facilities, and a courtyard.

Peace Church also maintains international ties, specifically with a Catholic church in Pesaro, Italy, located along the Adriatic Sea. This relationship fosters friendly exchanges and frequent visits between the two congregations.
