French Huguenot Church, Charleston

French Huguenot Church, Charleston

If Charleston had a quiet storyteller, it might sound like this church. The French Huguenot Church traces its roots back to the 1680s and still stands today as the only independent Huguenot church in the United States. Its first sanctuary, built in 1687, didn’t fall to time but to strategy—deliberately destroyed to stop the Great Fire of 1796 from spreading. The replacement, raised in 1800, also eventually gave way to the current building, a soft pink, Gothic Revival structure completed in the mid-19th century—the first of its kind in the city, and still one of its most distinctive.

To understand how it got here, you have to rewind to France in the 16th and 17th centuries, where Huguenots—French Protestants—faced increasing pressure in a predominantly Catholic country. When the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685, many of them fled. Some crossed the Atlantic and settled in Charleston, bringing along, apart from their beliefs, also their language, customs, and a strong sense of community that would shape the congregation for generations.

The church began under the Calvinist Reformed tradition of France, traces of which still remain. Services today, although mostly in English, follow an 18th-century French liturgy—an echo of the past carried into the present. Also, once a year, in spring, the language fully returns, when the service is held in French to mark the season’s arrival.

Inside, the details speak aloud. The wooden tracker organ, the ribbed Gothic ceiling, and the exterior buttresses all add to the atmosphere—restrained, but quietly expressive. If someone’s on duty, you can join a short tour and hear how this small congregation connects to a much larger story of migration and resilience.

Tours run in spring and fall, generally from 10 am to 4 pm, Monday through Thursday, and until 1 pm on Fridays. There’s no ticket required—just a donation, if you feel inclined—and a bit of time to listen...
