Frontiers of Flight Museum, Dallas
The Frontiers of Flight Museum, located in Dallas, is a significant symbol of the progress of aviation and space exploration. Founded in November 1988 by William E. Cooper, Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Jan Collmer, the museum reflects a strong interest in aviation history. Originally housed in a terminal at Dallas Love Field, it has since expanded to a large facility covering 100,000 square feet (approximately 9,300 square meters) on Lemmon Avenue, indicating its growth and dedication to providing a rich educational experience.
The museum owes much to aviation historian George E. Haddaway, whose extensive collection of aviation history materials formed the basis for its establishment. His donation to the University of Texas at Dallas laid the foundation for the History of Aviation Collection, which now constitutes a core part of the museum's exhibits.
As a proud member of the Smithsonian Affiliations program, the Frontiers of Flight Museum boasts a diverse collection spanning the history of aviation, with a focus on the contributions of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Its exhibits offer both education and inspiration, showcasing a variety of artifacts and vehicles that narrate humanity's journey into the skies and beyond.
Among the highlights of the museum's collection is the Apollo 7 Command Module, symbolizing significant milestones in space exploration. Visitors can also admire a replica of the World War I Sopwith Pup biplane, artifacts from the famous German airship Hindenburg, and an extensive array of over 200 models of World War II aircraft. These exhibits not only demonstrate technological progress but also honor the historical importance of these vehicles in shaping aviation history.
