Galgberget, Visby

Galgberget is a municipal nature reserve on the island of Gotland that holds both historical significance and natural beauty. It features barren vegetation, limestone cliffs, and bramble thickets, making it popular among outdoor enthusiasts. The name "Galgberget" originates from the gallows that once stood there, where criminals were executed. Though the gallows is gone, a circular stone wall and limestone pillars serve as reminders of its grim past.

The site's archaeological importance is evident from bone remains of executed individuals dating back to the 13th century. A mysterious labyrinth and lime kiln ruins also add to the area's intrigue. Galgberget's atmospheric charm is enhanced by nearby church ruins and modern developments.

During Medieval Week, the reserve immerses visitors in the island's medieval heritage through events like the medieval tent camp organized by the local SCA association. With its mix of history, landscapes, and recreational opportunities, Galgberget showcases the timeless allure of Gotland and its rich historical connections.
