Gardens of the Grand Trianon, Versailles
The Gardens of the Grand Trianon were meant to complement the Grand Trianon’s role as a retreat for the king-a place to escape the rigid etiquette of court life. Built under Louis XIV and developed by architects such as Jules Hardouin-Mansart, these gardens, unlike the vast, heavily orchestrated parterres in front of the main palace, offer flower beds, scented blossoms, geometric flower arrangements, groves, and fountains.
Another distinctive highlight of the Gardens of the Grand Trianon is the Cascade, an elegant fountain constructed in 1703 and positioned at the northern end of the Trianon-sous-Bois wing, designed with intricate marble decorations and sculptural elements. Nearby, the estate’s historic ice stores-insulated pits once filled with snow and ice during the winter-reveal a fascinating glimpse into 18th-century ingenuity. These underground chambers preserved ice well into the warmer months, ensuring a steady supply for cooling drinks and preparing refreshing ices.
The gardens are notable for their careful attention to both visual and sensory detail, with plantings selected as much for their fragrance as for their color. Winding paths lead past flower borders, shaded groves, ornate fountains, and classical sculptures. Unlike the often-crowded gardens near the main palace, this area offers a quieter atmosphere.
