Gathering Place, Tulsa (must see)
Opened on September 8, 2018, Gathering Place is a sprawling 100-acre riverfront park in Tulsa, designed to be a community space for connection, play, and discovery. Originally announced in 2014 under names like The Gathering Place and A Gathering Place for Tulsa, this ambitious public-private project is largely the vision of Tulsa philanthropist George Kaiser and was brought to life by acclaimed landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh.
The park offers something for everyone-from serene trails and gardens to energetic playgrounds and sports courts. Kids can roam the Chapman Adventure Playground, splash through interactive water features, or explore the skate park, while adults relax at the Williams Lodge, enjoy lakeside views from the boathouse, or unwind on the Great Lawn. Gathering Place also boasts a wetland pond, flower gardens, and miles of winding paths perfect for walking or cycling.
A hub for both recreation and social gatherings, the park includes state-of-the-art sports courts where visitors can play basketball, volleyball, street soccer, or street hockey. Courtside parking and night lighting make it easy to drop in for a pickup game-day or night.
Nationally recognized for its design and inclusivity, Gathering Place was voted Best New Attraction in the U.S. by USA Today in 2018. In 2019, it earned a spot on Time Magazine’s “World’s 100 Greatest Places” list, was highlighted by National Geographic for its mind-bending playgrounds, and was named one of the American Planning Association’s six great public spaces in America.
With its playful spirit, natural beauty, and world-class amenities, Gathering Place continues to redefine what a city park can be.
