Goodman Library, Napa
The Goodman Library, located on 1st Street in Napa, is a historic landmark and the longest-operating library in the state. Built in 1901, it was commissioned by George E. Goodman, who funded both the construction and the land donation. Designed by architect Luther M. Turton, the library introduced Richardson Romanesque elements to Napa’s architectural scene, a notable departure from the city’s predominantly Victorian style. Its rusticated stone façade, grand round-arched windows, and imposing structure made it a significant addition to the city’s landscape.
A key condition of Goodman's donation ensured that the building would remain a library-otherwise, ownership would revert to his heirs. When Napa relocated its main library in the 1970s, the Napa County Historical Society took over the building to maintain its original function, using it as a research library. At one point, it also housed Napa County Landmarks, reinforcing its role in preserving local heritage.
The Goodman Library earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1974. However, it suffered damage during the 2014 South Napa earthquake, necessitating extensive repairs. A restoration project completed in 2018 reinforced the structure, including new bracing and a roof. The Napa County Historical Society resumed operations later that year and continues to maintain library services and an exhibit space inside the building.
Beyond its historical significance, the Goodman Library has played a cultural and intellectual role in Napa for over a century. It has hosted lectures, art exhibitions, and literary gatherings, enriching the city’s educational landscape. Today, it stands as a 5,400-square-foot testament to Napa’s architectural evolution and community spirit.
