Port Louis Theater, Port Louis

The Port Louis Municipal Theater is one of the oldest surviving playhouses in the Southern Hemisphere and an important monument to the cultural history of Mauritius. Its origins can be traced to the late 18th century, when Joseph Laglaine, a health officer aboard a French warship, helped introduce theatrical performances to the island, then known as the Isle de France.

Laglaine brought a theatrical company to Port Louis in 1790, but a smallpox epidemic led to its dispersal two years later. He subsequently gathered surviving members of the troupe and local amateur performers to present productions in a hall in the Company Gardens. After that venue was destroyed by the cyclone of 1818, he campaigned for the construction of a permanent theater.

The site of the new building was granted in 1819 during the administration of acting governor Sir Ralph Darling. French architect Pierre Poujade designed the theater, while artist Pierre-Étienne Thuillier oversaw its interior decoration. The building was inaugurated on June 11, 1822, with a comedy and an opera, beginning its long career as one of Port Louis’s principal cultural venues.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the theater hosted plays, operas, concerts, and visiting companies, particularly from France and Réunion. Its classical exterior and Italian-style auditorium made it one of the capital’s most distinguished buildings. However, structural deterioration eventually forced it to close in 2008. Extensive restoration work has since been undertaken to preserve the building and prepare it for renewed cultural use. Visitors can presently admire its historic façade from the street but should check for updated access information before planning a visit.
