Grand Theatre, Kingston

Grand Theatre, Kingston

The Grand Theatre in Kingston is a treasured cultural landmark and a cornerstone of the city’s performing arts scene. Built in 1901–02 on the site of the former Martin's Opera House (destroyed by fire in 1898), the venue originally opened as the Grand Opera House. Its gala debut on January 14, 1902, marked the beginning of a rich performance history that has welcomed legends such as Sarah Bernhardt, Al Jolson, and Nellie Melba.

From 1905 to 1936, the theatre was under the ownership of impresario Ambrose J. Small, before being sold to Famous Players and converted into a movie house in 1938. It remained a cinema until 1961 when closure threatened demolition. Thanks to the efforts of the newly formed Kingston Arts Council, the building was saved and repurposed as a civic theatre. Renovations began in 1964, and The Grand Theatre reopened in 1966, welcoming the Kingston Symphony as a resident company with a performance of Spring Thaw.

Today, the Kingston Grand Theatre is a professionally managed civic asset and a hub for artistic expression and community engagement. With a 776-seat main theatre featuring a proscenium stage and orchestra pit, and a 105-seat black box theatre called The Baby Grand (co-founded by Sarah Garton Stanley and Eric Kaskens in 1985), the venue hosts a broad range of performances-from classical music and jazz to dance, comedy, and pop-rock.

More than a venue, the Grand Theatre supports local artists, builds community, and reflects Kingston’s commitment to everyday arts and culture. Its diverse programming continues to unite and inspire residents and visitors alike.
