Great Pulteney Street, Bath

Great Pulteney Street in Bath is one of the clearest expressions of the city’s late-18th-century expansion beyond its historic core. Commissioned by Sir William Pulteney and designed by Thomas Baldwin, it was completed in 1789 as part of the development of the Bathwick estate across the River Avon, made accessible by Pulteney Bridge.

At 1,000 feet long and 100 feet wide, it stands as the most imposing street in Bath. Baldwin designed a unifying Georgian façade, while the houses and hotels behind it were built individually, creating interiors that differ despite the consistent exterior.

The street would have been familiar to Jane Austen, who lived nearby at Sydney Place and regularly walked here toward the city centre. In Northanger Abbey, Catherine Morland stays in Great Pulteney Street with the Allens, whose lodgings are described as large and fashionable. In Persuasion, the nearby Laura Place is home to the socially prominent Dalrymple family.

The long, straight axis leads toward the Holburne Museum at the eastern end, while the western end reconnects with the historic centre. Today, the street remains largely residential.
