Griftpark is a remarkable example of urban transformation, evolving from a contaminated industrial wasteland into one of Utrecht’s most beloved green spaces. Located in the heart of the city, this 4,000-acre park now attracts over 10 million visitors annually, offering a blend of modern recreation, sustainability, and community engagement.

In the 1980s, the site was far from the lush retreat it is today. It housed a gas factory and a landfill, leaving behind heavily polluted soil and environmental hazards. Recognizing the risks, the Utrecht town council initiated a massive cleanup, using innovative soil treatments and containment methods. By 1995, the site was declared safe, and the newly constructed Prospect Hill-a 60-meter-high knoll built to isolate contamination-became a popular vantage point for panoramic city views.

The park’s reinvention continued throughout the 1990s with professional landscaping, expansive lawns, and scenic walking paths. A pond for waterfowl was added in 2004, reinforcing Griftpark’s commitment to biodiversity. The 220-meter-long plant wall, a collaborative effort with local environmentalists, further emphasized sustainability.

Beyond its natural beauty, Griftpark is a hub of recreation and social life. It boasts basketball courts, a football cage, a skate park, and an adventure-filled playground for children. Peter’s Bistro, located by the water, provides a charming dining spot. However, the highlight for many families is the children’s farm and petting zoo, where young visitors can interact with goats, rabbits, and other friendly animals. The Grftspeede complex also hosts community workshops, classes, and a snack bar filled with treats.
