Immersed in the vibrant landscape of Haifa, the Hanging Gardens of Haifa, also known as the Terraces of the Bahá’í Faith, are an awe-inspiring example of beauty, spirituality, and architectural ingenuity. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Carmel, these breathtaking gardens extend across 19 terraces, each adorned with exquisite flora, flowing water features, and meticulously manicured greenery.

Because the terraces are a highly sacred site of spiritual devotion, visitors must observe a modest dress code requiring clothing that covers both the shoulders and the knees. While independent travelers can admire the gardens from designated viewing balconies, walking the central staircases and fully traversing the inner terraces is an exclusive experience available only through the free daily guided tours.

Constructed between 1987 and 2001 under the guidance of renowned architect Fariborz Sahba, the Hanging Gardens serve as a symbolic representation of the Bahá’í Faith, a monotheistic religion that promotes unity and the oneness of humanity.

The journey typically begins at the very top of Mount Carmel, at the upper terrace panoramic balcony. This observation deck frames a breathtaking view of the cascading lawns below and offers an exceptionally clear and memorable panorama of Haifa, the historic German Colony, and the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. From this vantage point, the guided tour descends the mountainside, allowing visitors to appreciate the impressive geometric precision of the landscape as each terrace unfolds into the next.

As you descend toward the midpoint of the mountain slope, you reach the level of the Shrine of the Báb, founder of the Bábí Faith and forerunner of Bahá’u’lláh. The guided tour concludes here, exiting onto Hatzionut Avenue. While the tour bypasses the inner courtyard to preserve its tranquility, independent visits during designated morning hours allow access to the elegant white marble plaza. Walking along its quiet, polished pathways offers close-up views of the shrine’s intricate stone carvings and golden dome, which blends architectural influences from both East and West.

To complete the experience, visitors can continue independently to the lower gates at the foot of the hill. Passing through the wrought-iron entrance reveals an elegant stone fountain plaza, where tiered cascades and stone channels create a soothing soundtrack while drawing the eye back up the grand central axis toward the mountain crest.
