Hercules Plaza, Wilmington
Hercules Plaza is a striking postmodern office tower located on North Market Street in Wilmington, along the banks of Brandywine Creek. Completed in 1982–83 and designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, the building rises approximately 65 meters (214 feet) over 14 stories, making it one of the tallest in the city. Initially constructed as the corporate headquarters for Hercules Incorporated, a chemical company spun off from DuPont, it later became affiliated with Ashland Inc. after 2008. Its distinctive architectural design-a blue-green glass curtain wall atop a stone base with faux cornices-evokes both modern ambition and historical reference.
The tower’s centerpiece is a soaring 12-story atrium, featuring bold color-block panels inspired by Piet Mondrian and illuminated by dramatic globe lights, a subtle nod to Frank Lloyd Wright. A large clock above the entrance adds a whimsical touch to its otherwise corporate profile, reinforcing its identity in the city’s skyline. Today, Hercules Plaza remains a prominent business address, serving a mix of tenants and enterprises.
Beyond office space, the building has embraced the evolving needs of its downtown location. It offers a range of amenities, including 1313 Innovation-a mobile tech innovation center-as well as a food court with options like Bain’s Deli, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Salad Master. Visitors and tenants also enjoy access to a stylish lounge area with complimentary Wi-Fi.
Strategically positioned in Wilmington’s commercial district, Hercules Plaza continues to contribute to the city’s business-friendly image and urban revitalization. With its combination of design innovation, historical ties, and modern utility, the tower stands as both an architectural statement and a dynamic workplace hub.

Wilmington Introduction Walking Tour
Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware. It lies at the confluence of the Brandywine and Christina Rivers. Wilmington was originally home to the Lenape people. However, the land was purchased from Chief Mattahorn by the Swedish South Company in 1638. They built Fort Christina at the mouth of what would later be called the Christina River.
