Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Sydney
Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church was established in 1912 by Ukrainian immigrants seeking a dedicated place of worship and community. The parish officially opened its first church in 1913, under the spiritual leadership of Bishop Nykyta Budka, marking it as a cornerstone of Ukrainian culture in the region. Inside, visitors encounter a traditional Byzantine interior, complete with an ikonostas, altar, and devotional spaces typical of the Eastern Catholic tradition.
The church you see today is a 1933 reconstruction, built on the original foundation after a fire destroyed the first structure in 1932. Its wood-framed design, crowned with onion domes and ornate Byzantine elements, beautifully reflects the Eastern Rite traditions and the tenacity of its founding community. As the only Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church east of Montreal, it also stands as a unique regional landmark.
In recognition of its architectural significance and historical role in shaping Sydney’s multicultural identity, the church was officially designated a Provincially Registered Property in 1984. This designation underscores its importance not only as a place of worship but also as a vital part of Nova Scotia's cultural mosaic.
