Hükümet Konağı (Government House), Izmir

The Izmir Government House is a historic building in Izmir, renowned not only for its architectural significance but primarily for its symbolic role in Turkish history. On September 9, 1922, it became the site where the Turkish flag was raised, marking the city’s liberation and the proclamation of national independence. This moment has solidified the Government House’s reputation as an iconic structure of Konak Square, the very heart of Izmir.

The origins of the Government House trace back to the early 19th century when it was known as the Voyvoda Mansion, or the Katipzade Mansion, owned by the prominent Katipzade family. The mansion was later rented by the Ottoman Empire and used as the governor's office. By the mid-19th century, the Ottoman authorities decided to modernize their administrative buildings, and in 1867, a project for a new structure was approved. The new Government House was completed in 1872 on the site of the old mansion and served the city for nearly a century.

A devastating fire on July 31, 1970, partially destroyed the building, and it was subsequently demolished in the following years. A new project was initiated in 1971, leading to the rebuilding of the main structure in the 1980s, faithful to the original design. However, the surrounding buildings were replaced with modern high-rise structures, altering the architectural landscape of the area.

The building underwent another round of extensive restoration from 2017 to 2021 to address maintenance needs and preserve its historical essence. Today, the Izmir Government House stands as a testament to both the city’s rich history and the ongoing efforts to maintain its cultural heritage.
