Iglesia de los Santos Justo y Pastor (Church of Saints Justo and Pastor), Segovia

Iglesia de los Santos Justo y Pastor (Church of Saints Justo and Pastor), Segovia

The Church of Saints Justo and Pastor is a Roman Catholic temple located near the Plaza del Azoguejo, on the opposite side of the famous aqueduct. Originally built in the 12th century, this Romanesque church stands on the site of a former hermitage dedicated to Christ of the Gascones.

One of the notable features of the church is its impressive tower, which showcases openings with columns. There are two portals-one of them is closed to the outside and can only be seen from the interior, while the other is polychromatic and represents the late Romanesque style.

The church underwent restoration in the early 1960s, during which significant Romanesque paintings were uncovered in the apse. These paintings depict various themes commonly found in Romanesque art, such as the Pantocrator in a mandorla with the Tetramorphs, biblical scenes, the Crucifixion, the Descent of Jesus, the Last Supper, and the Arrest of Jesus. There are also elements of Oriental inspiration, including representations of elephants, birds, and arabesques.

One of the revered treasures housed in the church is an 11th-century Romanesque carving known as the Christ of the Gascons. This sculpture features articulated arms and is highly venerated. According to legend, the carving originated from France and is believed to have performed several meteorological miracles, including bringing rain during times of drought-a narrative documented in the 17th century. The image of the Christ of the Gascons is taken out in procession by the Royal Brotherhood of the Holy and Venerable Slavery and the Holy Burial.

They say the aqueduct of Segovia was built by the Devil himself. Allegedly, a woman grew tired of carrying water uphill and turned to an unusual “architect” for help. The deal they struck was rather competitive: the Devil would claim her soul only if he completed the aqueduct before dawn. He failed, leaving a gap in the structure that remains to this day.
