Iglesia Maria Auxiliadora (Mary Help of Christians Church), Asuncion
The Mary Help of Christians Church in Asunción stands as one of Paraguay’s most significant Catholic sanctuaries, rooted in a long tradition of Salesian devotion. This religious journey began on July 23, 1896, with the arrival of the first four Salesians in Paraguay. They established the "Monsignor Lasagna" school, which included a modest chapel dedicated to Mary Help of Christians-an essential spiritual figure in the Salesian mission.
By 1905, a chapel at Don Bosco and Humaitá became a key center of Marian devotion. Declared a vice-parish in 1911, it sparked vibrant community activity. Though plans for a larger sanctuary began in 1915, they were delayed for decades due to political and economic challenges. A final commitment to build the national shrine came in 1971, marking 75 years of Salesian presence in Paraguay.
Construction of the sanctuary began on May 24, 1980. By 1985, major features like the dome, stained glass windows, and flooring were completed. In 1989, the church was solemnly blessed by its former parish priest, Archbishop Ismael Rolón of Asunción. Towering above the sanctuary dome is a striking 1,500-kilogram steel sculpture by Herman Guggiari: a mother and child over the map of Paraguay, scattering flowers and holding the dove of peace-a powerful symbol of faith and national unity.
Today, the Mary Help of Christians Church offers not only spiritual guidance but also a serene, welcoming space for worship. The church is known for its spacious and well-maintained facilities, ample parking, and especially its moving Sunday Masses. With its peaceful ambiance and deep-rooted legacy, the sanctuary remains a beloved place of devotion and reflection for the faithful across Paraguay.
