Igreja dos Loios (Church of the Loios), Evora
The Church of the Lóios holds a significant place in the historical and architectural heritage of Évora. The church, closely connected to the Convent of the Lóios, was built in the 15th century and carries a rich history marked by noble patronage and architectural evolution.
This religious site owes its existence to the initiative of the first Count of Olivença, D. Rodrigo Afonso de Melo. With a deep commitment to his family's legacy, he commissioned the construction of the Church of São João Evangelista, nestled within the Convent of the Lóios. This church was founded in 1485 by D. Rodrigo, who belonged to a branch of the Dukes of Cadaval and held a close connection to the congregation of Santo Elói. He entrusted his family's tomb and pantheon to the friars of this congregation.
The church's consecration took place in 1491, marking its official dedication for worship. The interior of the church holds the resting places of prominent figures such as D. Rodrigo de Sousa, his wife, D. Rui de Sousa, and D. Branca de Vilhena. Intricately designed Flemish tombstones in bronze, originally part of the church's decor, now reside in the Museum of the House of Cadaval.
