Il Piccolo Teatro di Catania (Small Theater of Catania), Catania

The Small Theater of Catania (Il Piccolo Teatro della Città) is a cornerstone of cultural and theatrical innovation in Catania. Established in 1966 by a passionate group of young actors and technicians, this institution began as a cultural association committed to presenting avant-garde performances. It has since grown into a vibrant theater company and venue, renowned for its dedication to "theatrical philology" and lesser-known works.

The current theater, inaugurated in 1989, was designed by the company's driving force, director Gianni Salvo. With 242 seats and an amphitheater-style structure, the venue offers exceptional acoustics, making it not only a hub for theatrical performances but also a destination for concerts and studio recordings.

Over its history, the theater has cultivated a reputation as a stage for innovation, presenting groundbreaking works such as Bertolt Brecht's A Man is a Man, Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt, and Vladimir Mayakovsky's The Bedbug. The Small Theater has also embraced an international outlook, collaborating with global artists and institutions like the Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini, the Black Theater of Prague, and the French Théatre du Campagnol.

In the 1990s, the theater expanded its offerings with significant cultural events, such as the "European Goldoni" festival in 1993, which celebrated Carlo Goldoni's bicentenary with international performances and scholarly conferences. Similarly, in 1998, it honored Bertolt Brecht's centenary with a study conference and a large-scale production of The Seven Deadly Sins, featuring over forty-six musicians in collaboration with the Vincenzo Bellini Musical Institute.

Today, the Small Theater of Catania continues to be a vibrant venue for performances, exhibitions, and cultural exploration, delighting audiences with a blend of historical reverence and innovative spirit. Whether showcasing classic works, hosting international productions, or creating new artistic expressions, it remains a beloved gathering place for the people of Catania.
