Institute of Jamaica, Kingston
Founded in 1879, the Institute of Jamaica stands as Jamaica's most influential organization dedicated to culture, art, and science. It assumes the role of a patron and advocates for the arts in Jamaica, supporting exhibitions and granting awards. Moreover, the Institute serves as the governing body for the nation's museums while overseeing various national artistic and cultural institutions, including the National Gallery, the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica, and the Jamaica Journal.
One of the highlights of the Institute of Jamaica is the National Museum, located south of the main red-brick building. You will easily spot it as a bright yellow structure. Once you step inside, you will be greeted by a collection of artifacts celebrating the African heritage of Jamaica. The wall opposite the entrance is adorned with a collection of masks titled Ubuntu, a Zulu term referring to the celebration of diversity.
Another highlight of the Institute of Jamaica is the Jamaica Music Museum. This is a treasure trove for music lovers. Look for rare vintage instruments, original vinyl recordings, and memorabilia from legends of Mento, Ska, and Reggae. The exhibit “From African to Jamaican” is a must-see for understanding the cultural roots of the island's global musical influence. Finding the museum is quite easy, as all you need to do is walk south toward the ocean after leaving the National Museum. At the first intersection, turn left and walk straight ahead until you notice a red glass vestibule with an arched canopy-that is the museum's entrance.
