Japanese Friendship Garden, San Jose

Japanese Friendship Garden, San Jose (must see)

Tucked within the peaceful bounds of Kelley Park in San Jose, the Japanese Friendship Garden is a six-acre sanctuary of calm, tradition, and natural beauty. Opened in October 1965, the garden celebrates the enduring sister-city relationship between San Jose and Okayama, Japan. Its design is inspired by Okayama’s famed Korakuen Garden-one of Japan’s most treasured landscape gardens-bringing a touch of Japanese elegance to California.

Visitors are greeted with meandering pathways, gently arching bridges, and three koi ponds connected by flowing streams at varying elevations. The ponds were originally stocked in 1966 with koi gifted from Okayama, symbolizing friendship and cultural exchange. Although a devastating fish virus in 2009 claimed 90% of the koi population, the garden has remained a symbol of resilience and continuity.

The setting, featuring a tea house, waterfalls, and occasional visits from egrets, provides a popular backdrop for weddings and quiet reflection alike. However, nature’s power made itself known again in 2017 when flooding from Coyote Creek submerged the lower pond and tea house, damaging vital infrastructure. As of 2022, the tea house has been restored, though some areas still await full repair.

Whether you're seeking a peaceful walk, a cultural experience, or simply a break from urban life, the Japanese Friendship Garden offers a graceful escape into harmony and renewal.
