Jardins de Versailles (Garden of Versailles), Versailles (must see)

The Garden of Versailles is a magnificent testament to the grandeur of French formal garden design. Situated to the west of the Palace of Versailles, this garden is part of a larger estate that was meticulously developed during the Ancien Régime. The domain of Versailles comprised two main sections: the Grand Parc, a vast wooded area surrounding the palace and the village of Versailles, and the Petit Parc, the formal gardens encircling the palace. Today, these areas are known as Versailles Park and the Garden of Versailles, respectively, with the latter located between the Palace of Versailles to the east, the Apollo's Chariot pond to the west, and the Neptune pond to the north.

The evolution of the Garden of Versailles reflects the historical and artistic transformations from the time of Louis XIII to the present day. Originally designed by the renowned landscape architect André Le Nôtre, the gardens have undergone numerous modifications, including changes in the names and layouts of various groves and extensive replanting efforts. Despite these changes, the garden has retained its formal, geometric structure and remains a symbol of French cultural heritage. The Small Parc, now commonly referred to as the Garden of Versailles, showcases a blend of meticulous design, grandeur, and artistic expression that has captivated visitors for centuries.

One of the most striking features of the Garden of Versailles is its extensive collection of artworks, comprising 386 pieces, including 221 statues. Among these, the figure of Apollo, the sun god, holds a prominent place. Apollo's likeness appears in seven different locations throughout the park, most notably in the Apollo Fountain, which serves as a focal point overlooking the Grand Canal. This idealized image of the Sun King, Louis XIV, embodies the king's association with the sun and his vision of absolute power and divine right.

The Garden of Versailles continues to enchant visitors with its harmonious blend of nature and art. Its well-maintained pathways, elaborate fountains, and carefully crafted groves offer a glimpse into the opulence and sophistication of the French court. Despite ongoing challenges such as water supply issues, the gardens remain a symbol of the enduring legacy of French landscape architecture and the visionary work of André Le Nôtre.
