Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery, London (must see)
Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery is a contemporary art gallery founded on April 6, 2000. It has developed a strong focus on Canadian ceramics while also presenting work in glass, painting, sculpture, woodturning, bronze, and fiber art. The gallery represents more than 125 Canadian artists, offering a broad view of current artistic practice. Its program reflects both technical skill and experimentation, showing how traditional craft methods continue to evolve in modern contexts.
The interior is arranged as a series of connected rooms, allowing different materials and styles to be displayed together. Ceramics are the main focus, ranging from functional vessels to sculptural pieces exploring texture and glaze. Glass adds light and transparency, while paintings and fiber works bring color and surface variation, allowing visitors to compare different materials and forms.
Since opening, the gallery has hosted over 250 shows in its dedicated private exhibition hall. Exhibitions change regularly, with rotating displays that bring in new artists and fresh combinations of work. One of the gallery’s main events is Matter of Clay, held every five years and dedicated to ceramic art. This exhibition highlights developments in the field and brings together a wide range of makers, offering insight into both established practices and newer directions.
The gallery is led by Jonathon Bancroft-Snell, with manager Brian Cooke, both known for their knowledge of artists and techniques. It has been linked to figures such as Ann Mortimer, Walter Dexter, and Goyer-Bonneau. Visitors can learn about processes like forming and firing clay or shaping glass, while the space functions as both an exhibition venue and a place for collecting contemporary Canadian art.
