Jonker Street, Melaka

Jonker Street, Melaka (must see)

Jonker Street, also known as Jonker Walk, is lined with historic houses dating back to the 17th century. During the day, vendors along Jonker Street sell all kinds of goods, but the area becomes even livelier during the night market. Held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, the market transforms the street into a pedestrian-only zone closed to traffic.

Although several international chains can be found nearby, the true character of Jonker Street lies in its locally owned shops and restaurants. The street was once especially well known for its antique shops, although many have since been replaced by souvenir stalls, clothing outlets, and shops selling packaged food.

A number of antique dealers remain, alongside vendors offering handicrafts, T-shirts, magnets, and tote bags. During the night market, buskers and other performers provide entertainment, although watching cooks prepare street food can be just as engaging.

Several attractions can also be visited along Jonker Street. Beginning at the eastern end and heading west, visitors will pass The Royal Press at No. 29, Jonker Walk World Heritage Park at No. 88, Hang Kasturi Mausoleum at No. 120, and Chong De Tang Temple at No. 133, in that order.

Jonker Street is accessible 24 hours a day. Visit during daylight hours to admire its Chinese-Malay architecture, then return for the lively atmosphere of the night market.
