Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard, Wilmington

Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard, Wilmington

The Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard in Wilmington is home to the Tall Ship of Delaware-a faithful replica of the original 17th-century Swedish pinnace that carried settlers to North America in 1638 to establish the short-lived colony of New Sweden. The original Kalmar Nyckel, built around 1625 and acquired by the Swedish crown in 1629, completed four successful transatlantic voyages-an extraordinary feat for any colonial vessel of the era. After serving both commercial and military purposes, the original ship was ultimately sunk during the First Anglo-Dutch War in 1652.

The replica ship was constructed on Wilmington’s historic 7th Street Peninsula, mere yards from the landing site of the original vessel at Fort Christina. Launched in 1997, the new Kalmar Nyckel was designed as both a floating classroom and a living tribute to early colonial exploration. The shipyard, operated by the nonprofit Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, plays a key role in the vessel’s maintenance, volunteer training, and robust educational outreach.

Today, the modern Kalmar Nyckel sails from April to November, traveling over 2,400 nautical miles annually and visiting ports from Virginia to New England. A dedicated crew of 250 volunteers, supported by USCG-certified officers, not only operates the ship but also leads its diverse educational programs. These include interactive experiences for students, public sailing excursions, and hands-on maritime history lessons.

Beyond education, the ship serves as a distinctive platform for diplomatic events, cultural celebrations, and state representation. As Delaware’s maritime ambassador, Kalmar Nyckel brings history to life while anchoring Wilmington’s identity to its colonial roots and transatlantic legacy.
