Kapu, Linz

Kapu, Linz

Discover KAPU-a vibrant, independent cultural center in Linz. Since its founding in 1985, this creative hub has flourished as the beating heart of the region’s alternative youth culture, hosting energetic Hip-Hop, punk, rock, and experimental concerts by both local and international artists.

The building itself is steeped in history. Erected in 1788 as a school, it later served as a barracks, soup kitchen, and handicraft school before becoming a youth centre. Its current cultural role was cemented when the city handed it over to KAPU in full by 1999.

More than a venue, KAPU is a bold junction of club culture, art, and social engagement. With a DIY spirit, it functions as a music club, creativity lab, social hub, exhibition and workshop space, and even a venue for garden-based projects and media-political experiments.

Over the years, it’s welcomed a rich lineup of notable acts-including Attwenger, NOFX, Fugazi, Bikini Kill, and the Grunge icons Nirvana, who played one of their only five Austrian concerts here in 1989.

Visitors often praise KAPU’s inclusive and bohemian ambiance, where live performances, affordable drinks, and eclectic crowds-ranging from students to seasoned subculture aficionados-come together in one unforgettable night.

With its raw artistic energy, underground music, and sociable creativity, KAPU promises a uniquely authentic Linz experience-a place where culture thrums, boundaries blur, and new connections spark.
