Komödchen (Comedy), Dusseldorf

The Comedy (Komodchen) in Dusseldorf is an iconic cabaret stage that has been part of the city's cultural landscape since 1947, offering a blend of sharp political satire and musical entertainment. Known affectionately among locals as "mediocre opera" for its irreverent style, the venue attracts visitors with its live performances, cozy music hall ambiance, and popular bar scene. Originally founded by Kay and Lore Lorentz, the Comedy began with a strong political-literary edge, with its first program, Positiv Dagegen, premiering on March 29, 1947, and featuring talents like Werner Vielhaber, Bernd Nesselhut, and Hanne Wieder.

In 1967, the theater relocated to its current spot in Dusseldorf's Old Town, with an unusual moving experience-the stage and props were transported by audience members during intermission. Over the years, the Comedy evolved, and when Lore left for a solo career in 1983, Kay Lorentz built a new ensemble. Following his passing in 1993, Lore returned briefly before passing the baton to their son, Kay S. Lorentz, who continues the family tradition today.

This legacy stage has launched the careers of cabaret stars such as Harald Schmidt, Volker Pispers, and Hugo Egon Balder, who brought the theater its celebrated reputation. In honor of the founders, the square in front is now the "Kay-und-Lore-Lorentz-Platz," and even a city school, the Lore Lorentz Schule, carries Lore's name. The Comedy remains a cultural touchstone, a mix of humor, music, and enduring charm in Dusseldorf's cabaret scene.

Dusseldorf Introduction Walking Tour

The area at the confluence of the Rhine and Dussel rivers was on the outskirts of the Roman Empire and settled by Germanic fishing tribes. It is from these small beginnings that the town takes its name. "Dorf" translates to "village" in English. The city of Dusseldorf has since grown far larger than that original eighth-century fishing village.

Dusseldorf's Old Beer (Altbier) Walk

Just as London has given us Porter, Dublin – Stout, Burton – the original (English) IPA, and Cologne – Kolsch, Dusseldorf has contributed to the world of beers its signature Altbier. They say, Dusseldorf and Altbier go together like onion rings and blood sausage. Curiously enough, though, this delicious, cool-fermented and malty brew, ranging in color from dark brown to copper, is not...  view more
