Konstepidemin (Epidemic of Art), Gothenburg
The Epidemic of Art (Konstepidemin) is situated in the heart of Gothenburg. This unique art center occupies a historical site that once served as Gothenburg’s Epidemical Hospital from 1886 to 1970. In 1987, a visionary group of artists transformed the 14 buildings and surrounding parkland, previously dedicated to combating epidemic diseases, into a flourishing center for art and culture.
Today, the Epidemic of Art is one of Sweden’s largest workplaces for artists, providing a creative home for over 120 independent artists. This vibrant community encompasses a diverse array of artistic disciplines, including visual arts, music, writing, acting, filmmaking, and dance. The center not only offers artists studio space but also serves as a vital cultural platform, presenting an extensive public program that features visual and performing art events, exhibitions, seminars, workshops, and more.
As an artist-run organization, the Epidemic of Art fosters a collaborative environment where projects and initiatives are driven by the collective efforts of its resident artists. This commitment to collaborative creativity is underpinned by a strong dedication to equality, diversity, and the prevention of discrimination in all facets of the organization's operations.
