La Paz Municipal Zoo, La Paz

The Vesty Pakos Municipal Biopark in La Paz, previously known as the La Paz Municipal Zoo, is a notable wildlife custody center. Managed by the Municipal Government of La Paz, it holds the distinction of being the first custody center in Bolivia to join the Latin American Association of Parks, Zoos, and Aquariums (ALPZA).

Positioned at an elevation of 3,250 meters above sea level and 14 kilometers from La Paz's city center, the Biopark is nestled in the Mallasa Macro District within the Mallasa National Park Protected Area. Covering 22.4 hectares, it enjoys a temperate climate that is ideal for wildlife conservation.

The Biopark's core mission is to house wild species in environments that mimic their natural habitats. This approach is aimed at raising public awareness and educating about issues such as wildlife trafficking, illegal possession, and commercialization. It also actively engages in conservation, rehabilitation, reintegration, and release programs, returning animals to their natural habitats when possible.

The Biopark hosts a variety of species, including those native to the Andes like the jucumari (Andean bear), quirquincho, condor, and eagles, as well as tropical species such as jaguars, toucans, lions, and monkeys. Its facilities are thoughtfully designed, featuring different enclosures like the space for camelids, the bear pit, the puma pit, the reptile house, a condor space, and others. It also boasts an artificial lagoon with a viewpoint.

Offering a pleasant, relaxing, and orderly experience, the Vesty Pakos Municipal Biopark provides visitors with ample spaces for family recreation and an opportunity to connect with nature and learn about wildlife conservation.
