Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland

Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland (must see)

Lake View Cemetery is on 285 acres and has numerous memorials to famous people. The collection of monuments is one thing that makes the cemetery Cleveland's top tourist destination. The trees and shrubbery have been carefully selected for their unique beauty. Events take place on the grounds regularly, including concerts.

One of the highlights is the James A. Garfield Memorial. This monument features artwork depicting President Garfield's life from his time as a teacher and Civil War figure to his time as the Commander-in-Chief. An outdoor balcony offers beautiful views of Lake Erie.

Wade Memorial Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places and in a neo-Classical style. Stained glass and mosaics created by Tiffany Studios are rich in Christian symbolism. Besides President Garfield, some of the famous people that this cemetery commemorates include neurosurgeon Dr. Harvey Williams Cushing, oil magnate John D. Rockefeller, African American mayor Carl B. Stokes, and detective Eliot Ness.
