Largo dos Aflitos (Aflitos Square), Salvador

Largo dos Aflitos (Aflitos Square), Salvador

This square is tucked away in a charming little historic neighborhood of Salvador, aptly named Aflitos, after the Church of Our Lord Good Jesus of Aflitos (“Igreja do Senhor Bom Jesus dos Aflitos”). But don’t be fooled by its quiet name-this spot is packed with culture and fun. The star attraction? A magnificent view of the Bay of All Saints and a sunset that will make you pause and stare. Nearby, you can catch a show at the Teatro Gamboa Nova or indulge in fine dining at the swanky Chez Bernard.

A trip to Aflitos Square offers a panoramic, no-strings-attached view of Itaparica Island (“Ilha de Itaparica”), the Salvador Port, and all the ships docked in the bay, plus sights like the 16th-century Solar do Unhão, the Fort of Saint Marcelo (“São Marcelo”), and the entire coastline from Comércio to Humaitá Point (“Ponta de Humaitá”).

While it's not exactly overrun by tourists, this square is definitely worth a visit, especially if you're looking to take in the scenery during the day.
