Le Miroir d'Eau (The Water Mirror), Nantes
The Water Mirror is a captivating urban installation located on the esplanade of Élisa-Mercœur square, directly in front of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany. This shallow, 1,300 m² granite-slab basin is covered with just 2 centimeters of water, creating a reflective surface that mirrors the castle's façade and nearby tramway, producing a striking visual experience. It was designed by architect Bruno Fortier in collaboration with the Artilia design office, fountain engineers JML, and the Diluvial company.
More than just a static feature, the Water Mirror integrates dynamic elements such as 208 misting nozzles and 32 vertical water jets that can shoot up to 1.5 meters high. These effects are activated in cycles-typically for ten minutes per hour-and are enhanced by colorful lighting displays in the evening. This versatility allows the space to shift between a serene reflective pool, a misty urban oasis, and a playful interactive fountain.
Installed in September 2015, the Water Mirror operates year-round, fed by an underground water reservoir that recirculates the water in a closed system. Only in cases of frost is it temporarily halted. As both a public artwork and a cooling urban element, the mirror has become a favorite spot for residents and visitors, offering a fresh perspective on Nantes' historical center.
