Le Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle (Natural History Museum), Tours

The Natural History Museum of Tours showcases a rich tapestry of natural history. Established in its current location on Président Merville Street (Rue du Président Merville) in 1989, this museum rose from the ashes of its predecessor, which was obliterated during the bombings of 1940. The museum offers a diverse array of exhibits across several dedicated spaces: a vivarium, a room for natural history collections, a library, and an area for temporary exhibitions, ensuring a dynamic visitor experience that changes throughout the year.

The museum originated in the 19th century amid Tours' architectural and urban changes. Significant 18th-century developments like Avenue de la Tranchée and the Wilson Bridge shifted the city’s layout from East-West to North-South. This led to the construction of key buildings including the town hall and the adjacent structure that initially hosted the Museum of Fine Arts and later the Natural History Museum on its second floor, starting in 1853.

Initially, the museum's collections were rich in mineralogy, paleontology, zoology, and botany, although it noted a scarcity of mammal and reptile specimens compared to its extensive bird collection. Over time, the museum enriched its holdings significantly through notable donations, including anatomical collections and exotic items from around the world, such as attributes from Indian chiefs and a Peruvian mummy.

Despite the destruction in 1940 and subsequent challenges including storage issues and loss of collections due to environmental and human factors, the museum's community rallied post-Liberation. The rebuilding efforts were supported by donations and contributions from the Natural Sciences Society and local scientific associations, which helped reconstitute the museum's collections.

Today, the Natural History Museum of Tours stands as a beacon of learning and preservation, encapsulating centuries of natural history and embodying the resilient spirit of its city. It serves not only as a custodian of past collections but also as an educational hub that continues to inspire curiosity and respect for the natural world.
