The Lentos Art Museum (Lentos Kunstmuseum) is one of Austria’s leading museums of modern and contemporary art, beautifully situated on the banks of the Danube in Linz. Opened in May 2003, this striking 130-meter-long building was designed by the Zurich-based architectural firm Weber & Hofer. Its transparent glass façade, which glows in vibrant colors at night, has become an iconic part of the city’s skyline. A distinctive “picture frame” cut through the building offers visitors stunning views of the Urfahr district and Pöstlingberg.
Inside, over 8,000 square meters of exhibition space presents a rich journey through modern art, beginning in the 19th century and spanning classical modernism, Expressionism, and contemporary works. The museum’s collection features masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and Lovis Corinth, alongside works by Man Ray, Alexander Rodtschenko, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, VALIE EXPORT, and many others. In total, it houses around 1,500 paintings, sculptures, and objects, over 10,000 works on paper, and 850 photographs, making it one of the most significant modern art collections in the country.
Lentos also hosts engaging special exhibitions, family-friendly programs, and a vibrant educational offering for children. Visitors can relax at the on-site restaurant and terrace, which offers panoramic views of the Danube, or attend events, lectures, and evening programs held within the museum. Art enthusiasts and curious travelers alike will find the Lentos Art Museum an inspiring cultural experience in the heart of Linz.
