Lettl Museum fur Surreale Kunst (Lettl Museum for Surreal Art), Augsburg
The Lettl Museum for Surreal Art showcases the works of painter Wolfgang Lettl and opened its doors in 2019. It serves as the successor to the Lettl Atrium, which was housed in the Swabian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Augsburg from 1993 until 2013, when it closed for renovation and reconstruction.
After several years of searching, a new location was found, and the museum was inaugurated on December 18, 2019, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Lettl’s birth; he passed away in 2008. The museum features 131 works spanning from 1942 to 2007, displayed over an area of approximately 650 to 700 square meters. Alongside Lettl’s well-known surrealist pieces, the collection also includes impressionist works and other paintings not previously shown in the Lettl Atrium's permanent exhibition.
In line with Lettl's wishes, the individual artworks are presented without explanatory texts, encouraging viewers to engage and interpret the pieces on their own. An audio guide is available, featuring thoughts from Lettl himself, offering insights that run parallel to the artworks rather than direct explanations. Visitors can also explore quotes from the artist and watch a 35-minute film about Wolfgang Lettl in a dedicated cinema room.
