Livorno Central Railway Station, Livorno
Livorno Central Railway Station (Stazione di Livorno Centrale) stands as the primary railway hub in Livorno, and plays a vital role on the Pisa–Livorno–Rome line. Handling around 5.3 million passengers annually, it accommodates various train services, including Inter-city and Eurostar connections.
The railway's history dates back to 1844 when a line between Livorno San Marco and Pisa's Leopolda station was inaugurated. However, by 1873, Livorno was bypassed as the main line shifted inland. It wasn't until 1910, when a coastal route connecting Cecina to Livorno was completed, that the city was reconnected to the primary rail network.
The station itself, which opened on July 3, 1910, reflects a thoughtful design by engineer Mangini, with a monumental façade envisioned by Frullani. Comprising three large buildings connected by lower wings, its architectural features include high arches, vertical windows, and a grand semicircular window. Inside, the impressive ticket office is adorned with marble and stucco, while two underpasses lead to seven platforms with elegant canopies. One of these underpasses also provides access to a park and ride facility, conveniently located near the PalaLivorno stadium.
