Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, Chattanooga
The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a historic funicular railway that transports passengers from the Saint Elmo neighborhood in Chattanooga to the summit of Lookout Mountain. Stretching approximately one mile (1.6 kilometers) in length, this standard-gauge railway features a steep incline with a maximum grade of 72.7%, making it one of the world’s steepest passenger railways. Since its opening on November 16, 1895, the Incline Railway has been a vital mode of transportation and a major tourist attraction, offering breathtaking views of the city and the Tennessee River from its upper station at Point Park.
Originally built by the Chattanooga Incline and Lula Lake Railway, the Incline Railway (Incline No. 2) replaced Incline No. 1 (1886–1895). Its Otis Elevator Company cable system enables two cars to operate simultaneously via a midway passing loop. Fires in 1896 and 1919 briefly halted service, with temporary replacements by Chattanooga Railway and Light Company. Acquired by Southern Coach Lines in the 1940s, it is now run by the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority.
Recognized as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1991, the Incline Railway continues to attract over 100,000 visitors annually. The upper station features an observation deck and a gift shop, while its proximity to Ruby Falls, Cavern Castle, and Rock City makes it a convenient stop for those exploring Chattanooga’s natural and historical wonders. The railway has gained national attention, including a feature on Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy in 2011.
Today, the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway remains an iconic piece of Chattanooga’s history and a beloved landmark for visitors and locals alike.
