Point Park, Chattanooga

Point Park, Chattanooga

Perched at the northernmost tip of Lookout Mountain, Point Park offers visitors some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Chattanooga and the winding Tennessee River below. This 16-acre park, part of the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park, is steeped in Civil War history, with its overlooks, monuments, and cannon positions interpreting the Battle of Lookout Mountain and the greater Battles for Chattanooga.

A paved loop around the park takes visitors past the New York Monument, a towering stone obelisk, and extends to the Ochs Museum, a historic stone building featuring exhibits on the region’s military past. Along the outer terrace of the museum, visitors can enjoy unobstructed views from the very edge of Lookout Mountain. Those seeking a bit more adventure can connect to longer trails, including the Bluff Trail leading to Sunset Rock.

The Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center, located just outside the park’s impressive stone arch entrance, houses exhibits and a notable James Walker painting depicting the battle fought on these slopes. Parking is available behind the visitor center, though it fills up quickly. Additional metered street parking is nearby, while larger vehicles like buses and RVs may need to park at the base of the mountain and take the Incline Railroad up.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a scenic walk, Point Park offers an unforgettable experience atop one of Tennessee’s most famous landscapes.
